About artist
Sergio Cavallerin was born in 1957 in Perugia, where he lives and works.
An artist who began working with advertising agencies at a very young age - creating various campaigns - he is well known as a graphic designer, illustrator and humorous cartoonist also for newspapers and magazines, both Italian and foreign, such as the magazine Guerin Sportivo and the Swiss magazine NebelSpalter. His constant research in the field of visual expression leads him to work on several fronts, embracing the graphic arts in their entirety, from painting to drawing, from illustration to photography, from comics to satirical cartoons using multimedia combinations, music and cinematography.
In the 1970s Sergio Cavallerin designed the popular Lando series for the Edifumetto.di milano publishing house. In 1983 he created the humorous graphics magazine Tratto, of which he is also the director - defining himself as <<disseminator of drawn art>>, and throughout the 1980s he continued his collaborations with national and foreign publishers. In the same period he began the Umbrian commitment to the diffusion of foreign comics in our peninsula, in particular American comics and Japanese manga, as co-founder of the publishing house Star Comics. In 2000 he also published a large selection of 300 personal works entitled "Levitazioni" (Levitations), and he became one of the most interesting authors of the Bel Paese. Some of these works, cartoons and humorous drawings, will be permanently exhibited at the House of Humor and Satire Museum in Gabrovo (Bulgaria), at the UN Gallery in New York (United States), in Legnica in Poland and at the Aydin Dogan Foundation (Turkey).
This is how Sergio Cavallerin successfully exhibits in more than 100 humorous exhibitions around the world, both solo and group shows, and it is no coincidence that in the last two decades awards for his interesting cartoons and his extraordinary art humor have intensified. He is therefore awarded at the Humor Salon in Bordighera, the International Exhibition of Humor in Warsaw (Poland), the International Exhibition of Humor in Gora (Poland), the International Biennial of Humor in Havana (Cuba) and the Salone Humoristico in Khokke-Heist (Belgium).
In 1993 Sergio Cavallerin founded the distribution company Star Shop for comics publications, which became a leader in the sector and is still one today, while in 2004 he created the series "Polimeri", acrylics on canvas which are soon hosted in some of the most prestigious Italian galleries and exhibition halls. Sequences of labyrinthine representations, the Polimeri, which directly involve the public with essential questions.
Certainly influenced by Pop Art, the Perugian artist observes contemporary society to obtain images and materials, and ask questions to the viewer in order to invite him to look for answers. He therefore shakes sleepy consciences, involving in a questioning only apparently carefree and in making this denunciation what remains stifled by the shapeless daily life: in this regard, not for nothing, all his POLYMERS are entitled "Where is it ...?" (alluding to seek the genius, the exceptional as well as inviting to reflect on the greenhouse effect, the melting of ice, etc.).
In 2007 Sergio Cavallerin also published "Felineide", a collection of paintings dedicated to the beloved universe of cats in which the images are accompanied by the texts of Vincenzo Mollica, who has always been his fan and supporter, so much so that in June 2011 in Naples at the Museo Civico del Maschio Angioino he presented a personal exhibition of Poppanti comics. From Comics to Pop Art.
In 2012 follows the volume "Cats", where the bond with cats finds expression in compositions rich in color and symbolic strength, with references to the already called Pop Art. The figure of the cat, or rather, becomes a sort of polar star that guides the excavation in and on itself, and the surrounding. His canvases were brought to Palazzo Malizia in Torgiano together with those of Antonio Amodio, Giorgio Griffa and Massimo Barzagli and to the Galleria delle Arti in Città di Castello with artists of the caliber of Alberto Burri, Sandro Chia, Afro Basaldella, Angela Accardi and Agostino Bonalumi.
Finally, in recent years Sergio Cavallerin has made a definitive leap into artistic "Olympus", going beyond the canvas to the ridge between painting and sculpture. His works actually become a 3D materialization of virtual language, GIF and Real Time because his goal is to leave a permanent object inside a space made up of bits and algorithms that move at the speed of light according to the contemporary, perhaps futuristic, cognitive method. The intuitive and minimalist avant-gardes developed at the dawn of the Sixties in America therefore take on a complete, readable, figurative form, returning to reality but not to the nineteenth-century realism of Gustave Courbet or Italian Verism, but to the iconographic, fulminating, scratchy iconography of social and cartoon films. As a result, the "Superficidinamiche" appear, a leap beyond Pop Art. Sergio Cavallerin's early works attract the eye like a magnet the metal and in the metal itself seem forged. They go from the symbols of Batman and Superman to the faces of Spiderman and Mickey Mouse, to the Facebook icon, emphasizing the Made in Italy with a very white shape canvas. The surfaces are iridescent, extra-sensitive to every imperceptible luminous movement and from wherever you look at them the visual response will never be the same as the previous one.
The works of this exceptional artist feed on light, restoring its expressive power, modulating and transforming itself following the will of the observer and there are many group exhibitions from 2012 to the present to which he has had the opportunity to expose his creativity.
